«Back to March News Bulletin

mom_with_carrier_120x172The first child has been the center of your attention his entire life. Introducing a brother or sister into his world may cause some confusion, but there are a few steps to take to help him adapt to his new and important role as a big brother.

  • Introduce the idea of a new baby. When you (or your wife) begin to show, explain to your toddler that there is a baby growing in your tummy. The visual bump will help him grasp the idea that something is changing. Tell him that this new baby will be his little brother or sister and that it will be a part of his family.

  • Arrange for your toddler to visit in the hospital. When your child enters the hospital room, make sure your hands are free for a hug. Talk to the toddler for a few minutes before you introduce the new baby to ease the transition.

  • Highlight the perks of being a ‘big kid.’ Take your toddler on little trips to the zoo, mall, park, or movie theater. Continue to remind him that ‘big kids’ get to do fun activities with Mom and Dad that the little baby isn’t old enough for.
